Before Your CT Scan
Preparation depends on the type of CT exam ordered.
Some scans require you to avoid eating or drinking for a period of time before your appointment. Others may require contrast material to help certain structures appear more clearly in the images.
Please let our imaging team know if you:
Have previously experienced a reaction to CT contrast material.
Have kidney disease or other conditions that may affect contrast use.
Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
Take medications that may require special instructions before your exam.
Our team will explain any preparation instructions when your appointment is scheduled.
During Your CT Scan
You will lie on a table that moves through the scanner’s circular opening. You may be asked to remain still or briefly hold your breath while images are captured.
The scan itself is generally quick and painless, although the total appointment time varies depending on the examination.
After Your CT Scan
Most patients can return to their usual activities immediately after the examination.
If you received contrast material, our team may recommend drinking additional fluids, depending on your medical needs.
A radiologist reviews your images and prepares a report, which is electronically sent to your referring healthcare provider, generally within 24 hours.
Your provider will discuss your results and any recommended next steps.

Boundary Community Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Department uses a fully digital imaging system.
Through our Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), diagnostic images and reports can be securely shared with participating hospitals and healthcare providers throughout North Idaho and Washington.
This helps support continuity of care when multiple providers or facilities are involved in your treatment.

Outpatient appointment hours:
Monday–Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Same-day appointments may be available. Please contact our Diagnostic Imaging Department to ask about scheduling.
